Congratulations on your new home!

If you lived in your home on January 1st of this year, you're eligible to apply for a break on your taxes! As long as this home is your primary residence, you may apply! (If you are over 65, and/or disabled the January 1 ownership and residency are not required.)

Homestead Exemptions:

What is a Homestead Exemption?

Homestead exemptions lower the taxable value of your home. All Texas homeowners may receive a General Residence Homestead Exemption of $25,000 on the value of their property.

Who qualifies?

These requirements must be met to receive the exemption:

  1. You own your home on January 1st of the year you are applying. (If you are over 65, and/or disabled the January 1 ownership and residency are not required.)
  2. On January 1st you must reside at the home as your primary residence, and can not claim any other property as a homestead.
  3. Only individual homeowners (not corporations or other entities) may receive an exemption.
  4. A house, condominium, or manufactured home may qualify as a homestead. This can include up to 20 acres if the land is also owned by the homeowner and is used as a yard, or for another purpose related to the residential use of the home.
  5. You must apply between January 1st and April 30th of the year for which you want the exemption.

How do you apply?

You must fill out the Application for Residential Homestead Exemption and send it to your local appraisal district. Be sure to fill out the form completely and read the instructions carefully. These forms can also be found on our website at www.RiverCityTeam.com by selecting the “Your Homestead” tab.

Don't push this off! The deadline to fill out your homestead exemption for 2021 is April 30th.

There is no fee to fill this form out. Be wary of scams who claim they'll file it for you!

Best Regards,
